Soaring Above the Shadows: Deilia’s Story
Growing up in Saposoa, Peru, isn't easy. For a teenager like Deilia, the daily reality didn't just involve school and chores—it meant navigating the very real, very heavy shadow of local drug cartels looking for their next recruits. In an area hit hard by poverty, it’s heartbreakingly easy for kids to get pulled into that world simply because they're looking for a way out or a place to belong.
But Deilia’s life changed completely when she crossed paths with Juan and Keyla. They run a grassroots, faith-based sports ministry called Jogo Bonito. They took Deilia in, giving her a safe place to land, deep biblical mentorship, and a community that actually saw her value.
It turned out, Deilia had a serious natural gift for the high jump. Her journey wasn't glamorous—she had to train without proper equipment, wrestle with intense financial hardship, and fight the psychological weight of her environment every single day. But fueled by faith and pure grit, she kept clearing the bar. Literally. Deilia didn’t just stay off the streets; she went on to qualify for the Peruvian National Championships three consecutive times. Today, she is an elite athlete and a living testament to what happens when a young person finds true purpose.
