Spiritual Antennae - Staff Devotion

A few weeks ago, I volunteered to help set up a small event at my church. To be honest, I really just wanted to relax at home, but I felt like I needed to honor my commitment to go. During my quiet times recently, I’ve been completing a study that talks about God always being at work around us and that we have the opportunity to join Him regularly in what He is doing. So as I walked up the steps to my church, I prayed a short prayer and said,

“God, I know you must have me here for a reason. Show me where you are working and how I can join You today.”

No sooner had I walked in the door, I was introduced to one of the women that was leading the event. After hearing that I worked for GO InterNational, she told me that her daughter had been searching for mission trips on our website. She had never been on a mission trip and was eager to go!

I mentioned I was planning a team next summer to Africa to work in a local school, and she informed me that her daughter hopes to one day teach overseas in a third world country. She believed that type of opportunity would be a wonderful experience for her daughter as she pursues her passion. Immediately, I realized God was at work around me and in this situation. I truly believe He wanted me at this event specifically so that I could connect with this family about missions.

Ephesians 6:18 says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

A few things stick out to me here. One is that we are to pray on all occasions. It’s the idea that we are to be in regular and frequent communication with God. The second thing is to be alert. One of the definitions of alert is to be quick to see, understand, and act in a particular situation. When we are in frequent communication with God, we are quick to see, understand, and act where God is at work around us. We are using, what my Dad refers to as, our “spiritual antennae.” When you think about the purpose of the antenna on an insect, it is similar to a nose but senses more information than a nose. The antenna helps perceive many different things that are going on around the insect. In the same way, when we use our spiritual antenna, we are more tuned in to God and readily able to hear and respond to where He is at work around us.

Are there opportunities that you have missed because you weren’t using your spiritual antenna? Ask the Heavenly Father to help put your spiritual antenna up so that He can show you opportunities where He is at work.

I promise you, God is at work all around you and is ready for you to join Him!
