TRIP 273

Meet the people of Tbilisi

The Republic of Georgia is a historically rich and culturally diverse nation at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Georgians take great pride in their deep traditions, warm hospitality, and strong national identity. While the majority of the population identifies with Orthodox Christianity, the country also has Muslim, Catholic, and other religious communities including Yazidi Kurds. Despite this religious heritage, many people struggle with spiritual nominalism, where faith is intertwined with superstition, cultural rituals, or secular influences. Challenges such as poverty, alcoholism, and the pursuit of wealth increasingly shape society. There is a need for genuine discipleship, sound biblical teaching, and the transformative power of the Gospel to bring true renewal and hope. Kurdish Diaspora - The Kurds in Tbilisi are a small minority, often facing social and economic challenges as they navigate life in a predominantly Georgian and Orthodox Christian society. Many are Yazidis, holding tightly to their unique religious and cultural identity despite pressures of assimilation and marginalization. As a stateless people, Kurdish communities in Tbilisi often struggle with limited opportunities and recognition, yet they maintain a strong sense of heritage and resilience.

Service Opportunities

The mission of our friends and partners in Tbilisi is to reach out to the minority Kurd population with a holistic vision of a life with Christ. The Good news church is reaching the youth of the city as well as building bridges within the Kurdish community. Children's ministries: Engage in a variety of initiatives aimed to nurture young minds in faith and provide a safe, engaging environment for learning about God's love. The Kurdish center hosts several after school and summer kids programs. In the summers, there are youth and adult camps that continue to impact youth for the gospel. Street ministry initiatives: Join local youth in seeking to be the hands of feet of Jesus to the lonely, lost and forgotten. The street ministry includes evangelistic initiatives and prayer walking. Home visitation: Join church leaders visiting Kurdish families to strengthen relationships and build trust. This is a great opportunity to learn the stories of Kurdish immigrants and understand the challenges they face.

Living Arrangements
Transportation
Meals

You will stay at the Kurdish ministry center in the Vazisubani district of the capital city of Tbilisi. There are separate rooms with bunk beds, a common bathroom and a common kitchen. There is a large meeting space where teams can meet which also functions as the space for youth and children’s meetings. The facilities ensure a safe and welcoming environment, allowing you to focus on ministry and connection.

Your team will fly into Tbilisi early in the morning and will be picked up by mission base leaders and volunteers. Your travel arrangements will be handled by your trip leader or a GO staff member 60 days prior to your departure. All in-country transportation will be a combination of public transportation (subway), taxis, and rented vans. All in-country transportation will be coordinated by GO international with our partners.

Meals are a mix of local Georgian and Kurdish cuisine as well as more internationally familiar dishes. Expect to try popular Georgian dishes like Khachapuri and Khinkali, as well as more regional dishes like Borscht. We do our best to help you eat like a local realizing that mission trips can stretch your pallet. We try our best to accommodate allergies.
